There is very little dispute over the fact that rail transport is more environmentally friendly than road transport. International experience shows that cities that have effective, efficient public transport systems have significant improvements in air quality.
Levels of nitrous oxide, carbon monoxide, diesel particles, carbon dioxide and airborne lead have negative impacts on society and in specific, developing children. A study of childhood lead exposure conducted in Alexandra and Johannesburg inner city showed that the mean blood lead burden exceed the US guideline level.
The Gautrain can have significant, positive impacts on air quality.
The Environmental Impact Assessment report describes the potential welfare cost (disruption to communities, etc) versus the benefits of Gautrain. It includes the impacts on ecology, noise and vibration sensitive areas, heritage and traffic.
