BRIGHT YOUNG MINDS REWARDED FOR TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS

Winning entries of an art competition colourfully depicted the bright future of public transport. Three of the winning schools each received a brand new personal computer from Gautrain in recognition of these young minds’ creative and inventive transport solutions.

To enter, children had to create posters according to the theme “picture your future mode of public transport”. The theme certainly encouraged the children’s imaginations as their posters depicted a range of fantastic futuristic transport modes like flying buses and rocketing taxis. However, the majority of entries reflected a need to solve traffic congestion, safety and accessibility. Depictions of Gautrain were also a favourite amongst the budding artists.

The three schools that each received a personal computer from Gautrain were Westbury Primary, Tlamatlama Primary in Tembisa and Dowlinglaan Primary in Newclare.

An overwhelming number of 300 Gauteng primary schools participated in the art competition. It was launched during last year’s public transport month by the MEC for Gauteng Department of Public Transport Roads and Works, Ignatius Jacobs. More than 3 000 entries were displayed at the launch in October.

The art competition was held to solicit the views of future decision makers and transport users on how the department can improve the future of transport in Gauteng.

Children were also encouraged to enter through Gautrain’s award winning website for primary schools, called Kids’ Station. Visit the website at http://kids.gautrain.co.za/.
