Extensive rehabilitation processes are underway to restore vegetation to an optimum state in areas where Gautrain construction has been completed.
Rehabilitation of the natural environment involves the grassing and landscaping of slopes for stabilisation and aesthetic purposes. In many areas along the route, environmental teams are also planting indigenous natural grass species. Where compaction occurred, ripping and revegetation is being carried out.
The rehabilitation of areas where construction had taken place and the requirements for final landscaping are in line with Gautrain’s Environmental Management Plan. The plan also covers aspects such as topsoil, waste management, ecological developments, red data species and heritage sites.
Adherence to Gautrain’s Environment Management Plan is a requirement of the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment. The aim is to ensure that sound environmental management processes are incorporated in day-to-day project construction and operations activities.
