ELECTRONIC TICKETING TO BENEFIT ALL PUBLIC TRANSPORT USERS

The use of electronic smart cards is a proven technology in modern public transport systems throughout the world. Commuters will only need one ticket to pay for a Gautrain trip, a Gautrain feeder bus and car parking. In future, this automated ticketing system will form part of a single ticketing system for all modes of public transport across Gauteng.

A single, electronic ticketing system will further allow commuters from low-income areas to have equal access to the economically active region serviced by Gautrain.

Seamless transfer between different transport modes will be enabled by physical integration of routes and stops, similar quality of service, and co-ordinated timetables. Commuters will be able plan their trips accurately and conveniently switch between Metrorail trains, municipal busses, taxi’s and Gautrain.

Transport smart cards enable passengers to use the same device to pay for a variety of transport services. Commuters will be able to use a preloaded smart at self-help, computerised ticket vending machines in order to later pay for train trips or parking. Money can be loaded on to the smart card via cash, debit cards or credit cards. Contactless technology means that smart cards can be scanned electronically when it is swiped past the Gautrain station access gate reader.

Opportunities are discussed for the same smart card to be used in future on other public transport modes such as commuter rail services and Bus Rapid Transit Systems in Johannesburg and Tshwane.

The vision for a single ticketing system for Gauteng was announced by Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa during his State of the Province address on 18 February. To oversee the realisation of this vision, a new body will be established by July this year, namely the Gauteng Transport Management Authority.

By integrating Gautrain’s ticketing system with all other modes of public transport, Gautrain will bring greater economic mobility and social development to the people of Gauteng.

Having access to efficient transport, more people can seek employment, start new businesses and access new markets. With regards to job creation, it is estimated that the Gautrain Project will create and/or retain about 93 000 direct, indirect and induced jobs during the design, construction and commissioning of the project and more than 2 700 jobs per annum during the operation and maintenance of the project.  Furthermore, it is estimated that an additional 40 000 jobs will be created due to developments in the vicinity of the stations.
