Transport authorities are investigating ways to coordinate schedules, fares and ticketing systems so that passengers can rely on hassle-free door-to-door public transport. Once implemented, passengers will conveniently and seamlessly switch between different modes of public transport such as buses, Metrorail trains and taxis.
The harmonious integration of all forms of public transport will offer passenger benefits such as short waiting times, reduced travel time, greater flexibility and accessibility. It will also allow passengers to plan their trips accurately thereby making public transport a mode of choice.
Public transport users in global cities like Paris already enjoy the convenience of seamless modal integration. The underground train system, the regional suburban train system, the bus system, and smaller systems such as the two light rail lines, are all interlinked and integrated, with regard to networks, scheduling, information systems, through-ticketing and transfer facilities.
The revamping and modernisation of Gauteng’s public transport and roads is aimed at creating a co-ordinated, integrated transport system for the entire province. It will also establish Gauteng as a Global City Region that uses international standards of service delivery with seamless mobility between municipalities provided by different modes of transport.
In the Gauteng Province in future, passengers will be able to use a single ticketing system for all modes of public transport across Gauteng. It has already been confirmed that Gautrain passengers will use preloaded smart cards which will be available at self-help, computerised ticket vending machines in order to pay for train trips, feeder bus trips or parking.
