DEVELOPMENT TRANSFORMS THE LIFE OF A FORMER SECURITY GUARD

When Meckson Manganye was employed at Gautrain’s (Province’s) Pretoria site office, he struggled to make ends meet as a security guard at a townhouse complex. Less than two years later, this family man is an inspector of works and has bought his own car as well as a plot in Soshanguve.

At first, Meckson received basic computer skills training and worked as a document controller at Gautrain’s Pretoria site office. However, Meckson also taught himself to use MS Project Management software by studying a manual in his spare time.  He also attended a first aid training course.

Soon, Meckson was exposed to the responsibilities of a works inspector. This requires the monitoring and recording of construction progress as set out according to the high standards specified in Gautrain’s Concession Agreement with Bombela.

After successfully attending a concrete construction course, Meckson was promoted to the position of works inspector. In addition, he attended an advanced MS Project Management course and recently received his certificate. Meckson now completes the same spot check reports and daily diaries as those completed by experienced and qualified site engineers. Meckson is also currently studying a Supervision of Building Construction course through Intec College.
