FEMALE OVERHEAD CRANE OPERATOR IN A MAN'S WORLD

Yvonne de Lange is a mother of two. But unlike most, she spends her working days 50 metres above ground as an overhead crane operator at Gautrain’s Park Station construction site.

“When I joined the Gautrain project I had difficulty adjusting due to my own insecurities. During those first two months I did not know what to expect having to work at a site where I would be one of a handful of females,” says Yvonne.

“I soon discovered that I was surrounded by a team of professionals who respected my role in the project and who never take me for granted. The team at Park Station has been extremely supportive and we have absolute trust in each other.”

As an overhead crane operator, Yvonne is responsible for loading equipment and machinery weighing less than 30 tonnes into and out of the Park Station tunnel. She also moves truck containers.

“It is encouraging to see positive changes and opportunities for women in construction, especially in heavy equipment operation,” she says.
