Gautrain carries high hopes, not the least of which is creating, directly and indirectly, an additional two million jobs by 2025.
Projections estimate that the Gautrain project has already created or sustained more than 29 400 jobs. This number was expected to increase to about 33 000 by next year.
But Gautrain is also a key development driver.
Project leader Jack Van der Merwe said entrepreneurs and property developers were already anticipating the project’s future impact. He predicted that the future trend would be to live, work, and seek entertainment along the Gautrain route.
Van der Merwe said the Gautrain was a catalyst for economic restructuring stimulating urban regeneration in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Ekurhuleni.
ROSEBANK STATION, AERIAL
Planned future developments around Gautrain stations include new road bridges, upgrading feeder roads, road intersections, pedestrian pathways, safe parking bays and passenger drop-off zones.
The Gauteng project also provides sought-after construction-related scholarships.
