FEEDER AND DISTRIBUTION SERVICES

The current land use densities in areas around the proposed Gautrain stations are such that only a limited percentage of potential Gautrain passengers will be able to initially access stations on foot. This means that the Gautrain will have to depend on passengers traveling to and from stations by means of either their own private vehicles or other public transport services.

Parking facilities at stations and public transport feeder and distribution services will facilitate this need.

The effectiveness and efficiency with which potential riders can travel from ‘door-to-door’ is therefore one of the critical success factors for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link system. Its aim is to provide a seamless or ‘one-stop’ service which will motivate customers to use this system. Important considerations for potential passengers include:

  • acceptable door-to-door travel time;
  • acceptable levels of service,
  • convenience and safety: and
  • acceptable fare prices.

The provision of effective and efficient access to Gautrain stations as part of a seamless ‘one-stop’ service will be achieved through:

  1. integration with existing public transport services;
  2. operation of dedicated feeder and distribution services to and from stations; and
  3. private vehicle parking at stations.

In the Position Paper on the Feeder and Distribution Services to Stations more can be read about the current traveling patterns (4.1) and considerations related to feeder and distribution services to stations (4.2).

More can be read about the infrastructure and facilities relevant to the Gautrain stations in section 7 of the Feeder and Distribution Service Report No. 3.5.
