During 2000 the matter of the gauge to be used for the Gautrain was investigated and a Technical Report was prepared and adopted. The findings of the report were such that the use of the standard gauge (1435mm gauge) was motivated.
At the Gautrain Investor Conference, held during September 2001, there was unanimity amongst attendees that proposals should be based upon standard gauge. The gauge report was adopted by the Gautrain Project Team as a whole, which at that time included representatives from Spoornet, the SARCC and the National Department of Transport, amongst others.
