VIGILANT SECURITY FOR PASSENGER SAFETY

A range of vigilant security systems will guard Gautrain passengers. This includes camera surveillance, the SAPS Railway Police and visible security officers at all stations, car parks and inside trains. Passengers will be assured that they are constantly guarded and that the latest security technology will monitor all movement across the entire system.

Monitoring the entire system

Over 650 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras will keep a watchful eye over the entire system. In addition, just over 400 security guards will be on duty at any given time.

The high technology central control system will bring commuters the best in global security standards used in rail transport today. Should any suspicious activities be spotted near the Gautrain network, the central control centre will act immediately.

The security control centre is located at the Midrand Depot. Highly trained operators will oversee closed circuit television networks, security surveillance monitors, automated ticketing and access control systems, public address systems, emergency telephones and passenger information displays. The central control centre will also maintain radio and wireless voice communication contact with each station and train driver.

In the case of accidents, security threats, power failures or other emergencies, alarm systems will register for the immediate despatching of the necessary safety, repair and rescue services. There is direct communication with all the necessary authorities such as the South African Police Services and the Gauteng Provincial Disaster Management Centre.

Besides CCTV cameras placed along the 2.4m high concrete palisade security fence which cordons off the entire rail network, regular maintenance patrols will also be carried out to prevent vandalism and unwanted entries. However, in case of an emergency, viaducts can be accessed via stairs and tunnels are equipped with emergency access shafts with safe havens for passengers.

Overpass bridges will be equipped with special barriers to keep trains safeguarded from unwanted entry or objects being thrown from above.
