Urban Joburg: Gautrain Update - February 15, 2010
From: http://urbanjoburg.blogspot.com/2010/02/gautrain-update.html

For this post, I thought it was time for an update on Gautrain. The latest images released from Gautrain particularly impressed me (as it did a few people on my twitter judging by the number of people who retweeted them) because they ...

I still look on and follow the Gautrain progress with a great deal of interest and excitement.

I feel particularly proud that I orchestrated the logistics of this prestigious move to South Africa and the photo is of myself (right) as Project Manager of Micor Super Group at the time and James Robinson the Engineer at Vanguard. This is in front of the first train landed at Durban terminal with much relief and excitement from all concerned.

gautrain-stationsWork well underway on stations as part of Johannesburg’s Gautrain transport system.

The construction of three new underground stations, part of the €1.7billion high-speed Gautrain system in South Africa, are well underway with the Sandton to OR Tambo Airport link intended to open in June 2010 in time for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

PRINCIPLES OF EMPOWERMENT (THE GAUTRAIN) - Posted on July 22nd, 2009 by

From: http://mukundacharan.wordpress.com/2009/07/21/principles-of-empowerment/

principles-of-empowermentSome enlightening principles of empowerment by the CEO of the Gautrain (Johannesburg fast train) Project, Mr Jack Van Der Merwe

Interviewer: ‘Your leadership can forever change the face of transport in South Africa. Isn’t that intimidating?’

Jack: ‘No. I work with an incredible team. In the past, management was all about command and control. That’s changed; you now have a massive knowledge base on tap. The people I work with know more than me on a whole range of subjects, so all I have to do is bring them together and give them room to do what they know best and manage that. I’m 99% dependent on the team.’

GAUTRAIN RAPID RAIL LINK - Posted on July 10th, 2009 by

gautrain-rapid-rail-linkSo after a safety debriefing at the Gautrain head office in Linbro Park, we were introduced to the head of engineering for the project (Jack van der Merwe was unable to attend). He showed us a presentation (last month’s update it seemed!), and told the contigent most of what was already known. We then collected our safety gear and boarded the bus to the depot:

GAU-TRAINING AGAIN - Posted on July 8th, 2009 by

gau-trainingHi guys

I was standing on a concrete slab in Marlboro last week, although it didn’t look like much, the only thing that kept going through my head was that this time next year, this place is going to be buzzing with people wanting to board the Gautrain.

BEHIND STEEL GATES - Posted on July 6th, 2009 by

From: http://jeromes1day.blogspot.com/2009/07/behind-steel-gates.html

behind_steel_gatesI had to shoot to a meeting in Pretoria about the merging of the two intranets of Metrorail (Tshwane and Wits). So while there I took the opportunity to take a photograph the Gautrain Pretoria Terminus since I post the Braamfontein one. Not much to see other than new viaducts but they seem to be far behind the rest of the line and from what I can gather from reports that the Dolomite rock formation in the region between Centurion and Pretoria is causing headaches. (Okay those powers that be that read these posts, I am still waiting for my invite to view the Gautrain up close and personal).

A DAY IN ROSEBANK - Posted on July 1st, 2009 by

From: http://www.urbansketchers.com/2009/04/day-in-rosebank.html

a-day-in-rosebankI feel it’s my duty to sketch some of the excavations that have disrupted Joburg streets over the last couple of years in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, difficult as I find them to draw! This is part of the ‘Gautrain’ being laid, our new fast metrorail system that will connect the airport, Pretoria, Sandton, the city and Soweto. This is from a steakhouse that overlooks what will be the Rosebank station - looks like they’ve got a way to go before next year, but it’s going to be of huge benefit to the city when it’s done.

TIRED MONDAY - Posted on June 29th, 2009 by

From: http://jeromes1day.blogspot.com/2009/05/tired-monday.html

tired-mondayAfter a good long weekend on the East Coast I caught the Greyhound back to Johannesburg while Carol took the car down to the South Coast for the rest of the week. Lucky her, she has an even longer holiday while I had to get back to work. I left Durban last night at 10pm and arrived up in Johannesburg at 5am and walked straight into work at Metrorail. I thought that I would be able to get some sleep on the bus but with my legs so long and the space allocated smaller than coach/economy class on an aeroplane there was little hope. Here is the progress on the Gautrain Terminus at just after 5am. Feeling of awe and wonder included.

AN OUTSIDERS VIEW OF SOUTH AFRICA - Posted on June 26th, 2009 by

From: http://urbanneighbourhood.wordpress.com/2008/10/28/an-outsiders-view-of-south-africa/

an-outsiders-view-of-southSoon South Africa’s first rapid railway, the R25.2 billion Gautrain will be available. The first phase of the project is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2010 World Cup. There are now major road and tunnel works happening throughout the Province of Gauteng. The 80 kilometres Gautrain will provide a world-class, fast, safe and reliable mode of public transport to major hubs in Johannesburg such as Sandton, central Johannesburg, Tshwane and Oliver Tambo International Airport. A rapid bus system is also underway.
