Bombela, the company responsible for the design and construction of the Gautrain, is preparing for the completion of Viaduct 3 that will pass over Allandale Road in Midrand. The work that will take place in two phases, will signal the first viaduct (bridge) construction to be completed along the 80km Gautrain rail alignment.
Phase 1 (Westbound) – The westbound lane of Allandale Road will be affected by the launching girder (named ‘Hakuna’) during construction of the spans above Allandale and on either side of the westbound carriageway. The works are expected to commence during the week of 24 March 2008, for a period of three (3) weeks.
When moving ‘Hakuna’ to the adjacent spans, the truss will be lowered onto the westbound lanes of Allandale road. Minimum clearance during this operation will be 4.7 meters and is expected to last for approximately one (1) to two (2) hours whenever this activity occurs. During the lowering of the truss, access to high vehicles and vehicles involved in the transportation of abnormal loads will be restricted by pointsmen.
Phase 2 (Eastbound) –The eastbound lanes on Allandale Road will be affected by the construction of the span above the eastbound carriageway. Eastbound traffic on Allandale Road will be affected for approximately three (3) weeks, of which two (2) of those weeks will be concurrent with Phase 1 impact on westbound traffic. Construction on the Allandale Road eastbound will commence during the week of 31 March 2008.
Upon completion of the span across the westbound carriageway, ‘Hakuna’ will be launched between the pier in the Allandale median and the pier close to the eastbound carriageway. Similar traffic measures will be put in place during the launching of ‘Hakuna’ that will go over the eastbound carriageway and will impact traffic traveling on Allandale towards Kempton Park.
Temporary sign boards informing motorists of the construction work and height restriction will be erected along Allandale Road. Metro Police will be assisting with traffic control during such operations. Bombela has implemented all required safety requirements to ensure public safety during this period.
