GAUTRAIN RESPONSE ON CRONIN'S STATEMENT

Posted on Mar 21, 2008 in Media Releases

We take note of Parliament’s Transport Committee chairman and deputy secretary-general of the South African Communist Party Jeremy Cronin’s statement in Parliament on 18 March that the construction costs of the Gautrain had risen towards the R35bn mark.

Jack van der Merwe, CEO Gautrain Management Agency said today “The Gautrain Project would like to reiterate that the total cost of R25.2bn for Gautrain’s Public Private Partnership contract, as approved by National Treasury on 26 September 2006, is a fixed prize, fixed scope and fixed period contract. This price can rise only if:

  • the CPIX rises above the level as predicted by the Reserve Bank. Government will then be responsible for the difference;
  • a claim by the Gautrain Concession Company, Bombela, if they deem the Gauteng Province is in breech of the contract as per the Concession Agreement; or
  • the Gauteng Province decides to extend the route and/or build more stations – this will then be done through a variation order.”

“None of the above has happened and at this point in time, the project is within budget and there are no indications that the cost will escalate to R35bn as stated by Cronin” concluded vd Merwe.
