The Gautrain said it will be offering free trips on Gautrain’s feeder buses on Wednesday 20 October 2010 for passengers commuting to the Gautrain’s Sandton and Rhodesfield Stations and to other stops along the bus routes.
The initiative is in support of Car Free Day which is aimed at encouraging motorists to leave their cars and create awareness on the benefits of using public transport. Travel on public transport modes such as the Gautrain are not only a key solution in reducing carbon emissions, but also in easing traffic congestion.
The Gautrain bus and feeder distributor system complements train services by transporting passengers between stations and surrounding suburbs and business nodes. Bus stops are available approximately every 500m, along 7 initial bus routes – Sandton, Rosebank, Fourways, Randburg, Wendywood, Rivonia and Rhodesfield. The bus schedules are designed to match the train schedules and operate from Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays) from 05h30 to 20h30. Buses cost R6 for commuters catching a bus and a train within one hour of each other. A fee of R20 a single trip is applicable for passengers that use the buses and do not use the train.
The free ride applicable on 20 October is limited to Gautrain buses and does not extend to other Gautrain services such as trains and parking.
Detailed bus routes and stop locations are available on the Gautrain website join.gautrain.co.za and at Gautrain stations. For further information, members of the public can contact the Gautrain customer contact centre on 0800 Gautrain (42887246).
