Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Dr. Ismail Vadi has appointed the new Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) Board for a three-year term with effect from 01 January 2015. Continuity of the membership of the Board is very important in facilitating its effectiveness and the MEC therefore re-appointed four of the previous GMA Board Members and the Chief Executive Officer to maintain continuity and they are as follows:

  • Ms Motseoa Alix-Mary Lugemwa – Chairperson;
  • Ms Doris Dondur – Deputy Chairperson;
  • Mr Mzolisi Nkumanda;
  • Prof Wellington Thwala and
  • Mr Jack van der Merwe – GMA Chief Executive Officer

The following new Board Members were appointed:

  • Mr Bolokang Lengane;
  • Ms Sebina Hlapolosa;
  • Mr Unathi Mntoninthsi; and
  • Mr Satish Roopa.

New Chairperson, Ms. Motseoa Lugemwa said that “the GMA is committed to sound corporate governance principles and is primarily guided by generally accepted corporate governance practices, as well as the Protocol on Corporate Governance in the Public Sector. These practices seek to ensure that the GMA’s mandate is fulfilled with due consideration to responsible decision making, accountability, effective and ethical leadership, as well as fairness and transparency whilst monitoring performance and compliance with statutory requirements.”

Ms Lugemwa gained her extensive experience as a Provincial Accountant General for the Gauteng Provincial Government. She has worked on a number of advisory assignments since leaving government. Ms Lugemwa is an independent management consultant specialising in financial management in the public sector. She has acquired experience in people management, leadership and strategic capability, assets and liabilities, financial accounting, risk management and supply chain management. This is furthermore her second term as a GMA board member.

Deputy Chairperson, Ms Doris Dondur continued from Ms Lugemwa by noting “that the new GMA Board is an opportunity to review and enhance GMA’s corporate governance and compliance practices and set a true ‘leadership tone’.”

Ms Dondur has extensive experience in the private and public sector; having worked at blue chip private sector companies like Woolworths, Foschini and ABI. She gained the public sector experience from her employment at the Office of the Auditor-General as a senior manager and later the provincial Auditor of the Gauteng Province. She was also the CFO of the Gauteng Gambling Board. She has established her own management consultancy. Ms Dondur has extensive skills and experience in corporate governance, financial management, auditing, IT, human resources, people management, leadership, change management, labour relations and business coaching.

The MEC has also appointed the GMA Board Advisors. The role of the Board Advisors is to advise the Board with reference to the views, interests and policies of their respective organisations. The Board Advisors are as follows:

  • Ms Tryphina Mokele – Gauteng Provincial Treasury
  • Mr Jan-David de Villiers – National Department of Transport
  • Mr Tshidiso Molukanele – Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport

Saying farewell and thank you to Mr Abel Mawela (previous Chairperson), Mr Donovan Nadison and Mr Mogopodi Mokoena, the GMA acknowledges their passion and commitment of the last few years.
